Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)
OSHC is health insurance that meets overseas student visa requirements. Australia’s ‘Medicare’ health system does not cover overseas students. Without private health insurance such as OSHC you would have to pay the full cost of any medical expense or hospital stay. This could add up to many thousands of dollars.
How do I get OSHC?

What am I covered for with nib OSHC?
Nib OSHC is insurance that provides cover for the costs of medical and hospital care which international students may need while you are anywhere in Australia. OSHC will also cover the cost of emergency ambulance transport and part of the costs for prescription drugs.
You can choose a single policy that covers you only or a family policy which provides health insurance for you, your partner and any dependent children under 18 if they live with you in Australia and are listed on your student visa.

How do I use my nib OSHC card?
If you need to visit a doctor of medical centre, show your nib card and your student ID when you attend your appointment. You will be charged the doctor's fee and the government fee component of that may be processed by the medical centre. If the medical centre is a part of nib OSHC Preferred Providers, it will allow you to claim straight away. If not, nib will only cover the medical fees up to the Medical Benefits Schedule (MBS) amount. This means that you may incur an additional charge. Remember to keep a receipt and you can submit a claim via nib online system.
Not everyone needs to organize OSHC
Some students may be exempt from enrolling in the OSHC such as students from countries whose Governments may have Reciprocal Health Agreements for students in Australia. Note: Only some reciprocal health agreements cover students in Australia (students from Norway, Sweden and Belgium), some will only cover visitors.
